The film, which was shot in January , was originally intended to be a TV special called Get Back featuring the group rehearsing for their first live show in over two years.
The early rehearsals captured the group, along with John Lennon's soon-to-be wife Yoko Ono, clearly bored, with only Paul McCartney showing any real enthusiasm for the new material.
The first part of the film shows the strain of the early morning sessions held in a cavernous soundstage at London's Twickenham film studios.
Producer George Martin recalled in The Beatles Anthology that the Let It Be project held great promise in the beginning: "They were going through a very, very revolutionary period at that time.
And they were trying to think of something new. They did actually come up with a very good idea, which I thought was well worth working on; The wanted to write an album completely and rehearse it and then perform it in front of a large audience -- and for that to be a live album of new material.
And we started rehearsing down at Twickenham film studios, and I went along with them. I suppose kinda like they do these days on Unplugged, except, y'know, it wasn't to be unplugged.
It was to do a live album. In John Lennon recalled the nearly month-long film shoot saying: "It was just a dreadful, dreadful feeling being filmed all the time.
I just wanted them to go away. And we'd be there at eight in the morning and you couldn't make music at eight in the morning, or 10, or whatever it was.
Reviews for the film, which was released a month after the group's breakup, were mixed, citing the sluggish and depressing nature of the film, as well as director Michael Lindsay-Hogg's sloppy editorial choices.
But across the board, both critics and fans agreed on the power of the group's triumphant rooftop set. Y'know, even before they assembled in January, the idea was, 'Let's get back to playing as a live band' -- pretty good idea.
But then it was, 'Let's make it an album and a film, and we're going to make the album a film of us doing a concert of songs we've never recorded before.
And then you're recording it -- the comparison I made in the book is kind of Nixon's 'The Watergate Tapes,' you have no idea that this stuff is going to comeback to haunt you forever.
But, what made it worthwhile was the rooftop, y'know? Because when I left that theater, I was this far off the ground.
Despite the fact that we knew everything that happened afterward. Yeah, that saves the film. He recalled prior to the lunchtime gig walking in on the four Beatles who were using one of the Apple offices as a makeshift dressing room: "It was like walking in on a band, a nervous bunch of guys getting ready to do an audition.
I don't know if it's because they hadn't played together, or whether they were trying to put the set together, but it was one of those kind of tense things where they were nervous.
When we locked the doors upstairs, and the minute they started playing -- and y'know all the. It's like it all went away and I really believe in my mind that they forgot everything and they were what they were.
They were the Beatles. Let It Be is a filmed documentary of the Beatles rehearsing and recording their new album in The film culminated with a concert by the group set on the rooftop on their own Apple office building in London's west end.
Paul McCartney's concept for the album and film was that it wasn't going to have studio trickery like overdubs and effects.
It was "back to the roots" with the Beatles performing the songs in a natural way. The film and it's accompanying soundtrack was delayed while the Beatles recorded and released their final album "Abbey Road".
For the Beatles completist and serious fans, the biggest frustration has been in not finding the "Beatles - Let It Be" in a complete, uncropped, great quality version.
The reason for this is quite interesting. The original film was shot in 16mm standard TV 4x3 format. The single mix made its album debut on the Beatles' — compilation album.
Original pressings erroneously show the running time of from the Let It Be album , and not the single version's running time of An early recording of the song appears on the compilation Anthology 3.
This version, take 1, was recorded on 25 January I wake up to the sound of music Instead, the first verse is repeated.
The track, as released on Anthology 3 also features studio talk between Lennon and McCartney prior to a 31 January take: [20].
Lennon: Are we supposed to giggle in the solo? McCartney: Yeah. Lennon: OK. McCartney: This'll — this is gonna knock you out, boy. Also, at the end of the song on the Anthology 3 version, Lennon can be heard saying, following another 31 January take, [20] "I think that was rather grand.
I'd take one home with me. OK let's track it. Gasps You bounder, you cheat! The running time of the Anthology version is Still another version of the song appeared on the Let It Be Naked album in The majority of this remix is take A from 31 January , with parts of take B as used in the film "Let It Be" , including the subdued guitar solo, spliced in.
This version contains a different piano track than the one on the studio and single versions. In the intro, McCartney plays an extra A bass note during the A minor chord very similar to the way he plays the intro in the film version ; he also plays a standard A minor chord in the piano at the first beat of measure two in the last verse on the lyric "mother", also like in the film version , while the other versions have a different piano harmonisation which can be easily interpreted as an unfixed mistake.
The backing vocals in the chorus of this version are similar to those in the single version, but are significantly reduced in volume while still retaining a reverb-heavy, choral effect.
Ringo Starr disliked Phil Spector 's version where Starr's drumming was augmented by Spector's "tape-delay-effect" to his hi-hats during the song's second verse and added shakers, so Let It Be Naked features his original "stripped-down-approach" drumming.
Also departed were the tom-tom overdub rolls, heard after the guitar solo during the third verse. Starr also commented that after the release of Naked , he would now have to listen to McCartney saying, "I told you so", when talking about Spector's production.
Naked is Glyn Johns mixed the song on 28 May as he finished the mixing for the Get Back album. This version was never released.
Again, this version of the LP was never officially released. The piano introduces the song, through a series of chords in the right hand over single notes in the left hand.
Although he considered that the melody paled beside some of the band's previous singles, Johnson added: "As ever with The Beatles, this is a record to stop you dead in your tracks and compel you to listen attentively.
Lennon also commented disparagingly on "Let It Be". In his Playboy interview, he disavowed any involvement with composing the song, saying: "That's Paul.
What can you say? Nothing to do with the Beatles. It could've been Wings. I don't know what he's thinking when he writes 'Let It Be'. Spignesi and Michael Lewis.
The Beatles : [40]. See List of Billboard Hot chart achievements and milestones. Although the song is performed regularly during McCartney's performances, there are a few notable performances.
In , the song was recorded by charity supergroup Ferry Aid which included McCartney. It reached number one on the UK Singles Chart for three weeks and reached the top ten in many other European countries.
The featured artists included McCartney, Boy George , Mark Knopfler and Kate Bush , as well as an ensemble chorus made up of media personalities and other musicians.
