November 26, Rating: 1. August 6, Full Review…. View All Critic Reviews Dec 07, That holds true until she is summoned by her cousin Franklin Bill Murray.
To her, it does not matter that he is the president of the United States, just that he makes her laugh.
And she makes a good companion for him, especially in giving him hand jobs. Have you ever heard of a movie getting trampled by bad reviews and then wondered how it could ever be that bad when it apparently has everything going for it?
And then watched it only to find out that yes it is that bad? Well, for me, that movie is "Hyde Park on Hudson" which contains lots of lovely period detail and technically fine performances but outside of Olivia Williams as Eleanor Roosevelt, all of this is as lively as the average wax museum.
When are we getting that Eleanor Roosevelt biopic anyway? Plus, there is the repetitive and unnecessary narration and a point of view that is superfluous at best which admittedly does point out that British American relations were a little rough in the years before PBS.
Walter M Super Reviewer. Dec 08, Billy Murray and Laura Linney shine here. They should have gotten Oscar nominations for the film. They have a great on screen chemistry.
Murray is great as F. The film felt like a stage play. It also felt like it was a part of the movie The King's Speech. It reminded me too much of the movie, My Week With Marilyn.
In fact, it copied the exact same style of that film. That was a big mistake in my opinion. The performance are great here.
Olivia Williams was very good. I recommend it for Murray's and Linney's performances. Sol C Super Reviewer. Jul 12, Though there seemed to be a lot to invest your attention in with this film, there is very little that will hold it.
The president, FDR, is staying there and running the country with the help of his advisors, mother, and wife, when she shows up.
The visit from King George and his wife was an interesting story, especially because each seems to think the other is trying to claim superiority over the other.
FDR is portrayed as an easy going, interesting, whimsical man, who likes to tell stories and is somewhat ashamed of his wheelchair.
Bill Murray has a wide scope as an actor, and oftentimes he picks serious roles where he is at the bottom of the barrel and he needs to find some way to climb out.
As FDR there is very little conflict, or unease about him, which is an unwelcome change of pace. There aren't any obstacles for him to overcome as president, and what little there is, is a simple fight with his fifth cousin, who narrates the film.
Laura Linney plays her, as one of FDR's mistresses, confidant, and friend. The way she is portrayed in the film most lands on trusted advisor, and their relationship seems only alluded to, and only for a brief moment at the beginning.
The main problem is that there's no tension or drama to this film. The screenwriter was one of the people who first found the real letters between FDR and Daisy Linney and wrote a script shortly after.
Because Hyde Park projects the values of the sexual revolution onto the New Deal president and his wife, some might presumptively classify it as a political exercise in character assassination.
It is an easy claim to make: Republicans have used the terminology and imagery of the counterculture in their efforts to attack Democrats for years, from George McGovern to Obama.
To suggest that the film has a political intent, however, would be giving the filmmakers too much credit. Hyde Park has only one purpose: To capitalize on the revelation that FDR had mistresses and to make a quick buck off of it.
There is simply no other coherent thought to be found in the film. The story of the King and Queen's weekend with the president is given no thematic connection to the love affair, and none of the characters reveal much sign of intelligence or humanity outside of their most primal impulses.
All of which makes Hyde Park very much a product of the current political era's tawdry obsession with fame and celebrity.
The film may have the look of a prestige picture, but it plays more like a version of FDR's life as told by TMZ, focusing on naughty details and ignoring the historical implications of the events depicted like, say, the fact that the conversations between FDR and King George might well end up determining the fate of the modern world.
Few filmmakers in the relatively small field of those who have made movies about U. Thirteen Days dramatically fills in the details of JFK's most important foreign policy success, the Cuban Missile Crisis, with nary a word of the president's legendary personal life.
By making one of JFK's advisors the central character instead of the president himself, the filmmakers allow him to remain somewhat elusive and do not risk breaking his myth.
The most recent entry in the genre, Steven Spielberg's Lincoln , may offer the best contrast of all. The tone is largely worshipful—this is Spielberg, after all—but the time we spend with Lincoln the human adds more weight to the other material.
In the more personal scenes, such as his monologue on Euclid offered to two low-level staffers, the film fulfills the audience's expectations of a peek behind the White House curtains and bolsters its message about good democracy in action by showing that actual, relatable people passed the 13th Amendment.
Hyde Park seems similar on the surface. It also reduces its subject from myth to man. The man it presents, however, is defined not by his humanity but by base desires and embarrassing secrets.
The other characters are that way, too. Daisy embarks on an affair with FDR simply because she is awed by his presence and the two seem to enjoy each other's company.
Rich details in costuming and set design may lend the proceedings an air of historical significance, but because the affair amounts to nothing, neither does the film.
This is not the critical deconstruction of a myth; it is the exploitation of that myth for box-office success. This central failure of the film crushes everything within it.
Many have wondered how Bill Murray would fare in such a role, and they may leave the theater still wondering.
His gift for subtle bemusement is no asset playing the larger-than-life FDR, but I'm not sure any actor would have done much better.
Murray quietly recedes, and we are left knowing little more about the man he plays than when we started.

No glitches or loading messages or lost signal. The movie on the other hand was not a real great piece of work and was disjointed and scattered.
It tried to get too much into a rather shallow and obvious plot and limited time frame. The alternative would have been to make the most boring prime time one season soap opera imaginable.
Watch a regular soap opera if you are so inclined or turn on something worthwhile like a cooking show or local high school band performance.
The directorial angle this film adopts is evident from the initial scenes. Obviously, it's a story that cannot be properly shared without an invasion of privacy, thus a candid emotional intimacy.
HPoHudson is a novel on stilts, so, each new idea is played out with a patience, color and subtlety common to reality and the written word.
Although the cinematography is good, giving us landscapes, discomfiting close-ups and descriptive shots gorgeous enough to be consumed as overpriced watercolors, it is the relationship between FDR and his distant cousin that pulls us along --which leads me to assert that the acting is also very good.
Laura Linney, as usual, plays sweet, pained and transparent Daisy with such an ease we forget we've seen her do it before. Bill Murray's excessively jovial flawed father figure is slightly less believable, but only because the portrayal is of FDR.
His actual performance is seamless. The disappointment expressed by other reviewers is understandable. My advice? Don't trust the trailer.
This movie is well put together, boasting a solid score, intriguing characters, lively action and a historical connection with a highly theatrical draw, but there are three side stories swirling around the two mugs they put on the box and the posters.
The central story disappoints. If you watch this film, enjoy the beauty created from the story boards and shot in nature, the accurate wardrobe.
Let your mind dance around the possible truths and bigger myths of our former first lady, Eleanor. If you watch this film, remember it's a period piece, a high-spirited, languid, misty, filtered, contradictory memoire.
HPoHudson was carefully crafted by those participating mystical movie mavens. Even the 'mistakes' that make it less appealing to its desired audience were puposeful.
It is a work of art and I liked it.
