This role showcases Washington's broad abilities very well. Fences gives us another stunning performance as a s era man struggling to raise his family the best he can find a way.
I loved this movie! It was right on for the era it portrayed. I love that the movie delved more into the characters than the scenery. We feel the crushed dreams of his youth.
Denzel Washington was excellent in this role, the viewer could imagine his life through his stories, facial expressions and body language.
Now, the wife, played by Viola Davis, brought much out of me, being married nearly 40 years myself, then getting "tired of the foolishness" and leaving, I became angry at what she did not do, but by the end, I realized she did what she thought was best.
Viola gave true heart to this role, the emotions she portrayed, were vivid and true. If you cannot relate to this movie, that's ok, but in my world, and many others like me, growing up this was a reality, this thing called hard life, dashed dreams and harsh realities, the only hope your parents had were that you grew to be better than them.
Highly recommend viewing this movie Both of the leading actors played with such intensity and emotion, I felt as if I was watching their story play out in front of me, as if I was in the room.
I don't want to give too much away, but I will tell you that we are our parents children, the good, the bad and the complicated. No matter how much we try, we still carry characteristic of them within us.
As for the movie, you will find that there are those of us who are fighting outside demons, but then we have those demons within us that are much harder to fight.
What is important that we have people around us that love us unconditionally, and they are what make our lives matter, even if we don't see it in ourselves.
You will not regret seeing this incredible journey of a man and his family. And the forks in the road that the family must take by the actions of this man.

The first long soliloquy by Denzel really struck me that we were watching a video of a stage production. Settling in to that realization helped cope with the pace and also helped me realize that this film was not advocating for the behavior of the characters as some reviewers apparently expected but was just presenting a biographical sketch from the period.
Life the way the writer saw it, that's all. With all the tedious Hollywood agendizing these days, that was actually very refreshing.
But I'm still used to Denzel being a hero though there was Training Day And as a dad, it was a little painful to watch the family dynamics.

For the most part, this drama succeeds. An old-school family's trust is broken when the husband admits to being unfaithful.
What follows is an almost Shakespearean American drama that is fuelled by values and traditions. On paper, these characters are formidable forces.
Proud individuals who hold the utmost respect for themselves, yet their lives are far from the idyllic dreams that they once had.
The son has the same aspirations as the father, yet due to his failed ventures he refuses to let his son follow the same doomed path.
Insinuating that racism played a fundamental role to his demise, he attempts to manipulate his son into thinking the same. It's a harsh family environment where the members are constantly treading carefully, fortunately Wilson's screenplay conveys the tension eloquently.
The first act is a tidal wave of dialogue that allows Washington and Davis to establish their prominence. The latter being incredible, particularly during the snot-filled scene where she exclaims "Well I've been standing here with you!
Immediately I was stricken with goosebumps. Washington's directing style was simple as he ensures the screenplay is at the forefront.
However, the major issue I have with this unabridged conversion of the play is that it has no cinematic style.
It's as if I was watching the play, yet because Washington attempted to adapt this cinematically he consequently loses the theatrical intensity.
Thus I struggled to remain compelled through certain scenes. So much dialogue and acting that it just doesn't settle, it lacked that emotional involvement.
Fences is an incredibly intimidating film, wonderfully written and acted but occasionally disinteresting. I just wanted something more from this Oh dear.
If you can't sleep.. I had to rewind it 4 times to get to the end. It's all talk, talk, talk. The scenes go on forever and you really have to concentrate as Denzel's accent is good but very fast paced and can be hard to follow.
There isn't much of a soundtrack to convey feelings or help the scenes move smoothly and I think this is why this film is so slow to progress..
I will try again but it's just so slow and it's hard to watch without your mind wandering and ending up thinking about what you need from the supermarket this week..

In truth I found it arduous and actually boring. I know this did well in the Oscars and can appreciate the decent acting but I have watched it now twice and really did not enjoy it.
