If she had not been so beautiful, so aristocratic, it might not have been so bad. But the incongruity between their fantasy of her and what she was- a total feminist activist to the end of her life- they couldn't tolerate that.
She was as much of a force in our lives as on the screen, and that's something Trivia: Her homeland Belgium didn't inform much of her work, but traveling abroad did.
After dropping out of film school she moved to New York City. Like an estuary of memory, these narratives converge around political and private histories of the Shoah, and No Home Movie becomes a testament to the sorrow weathered by a matriarch and her ethnoreligious people.
And this is what she leaves us — a cinema of unmade beds. Just as an unhinged camera disrupts the spatial order of her kitchen, the increasingly frantic girl destroys a quotidian arsenal of objects — pots, pans, mops — which have shackled her gender for generations.
In intimate but enervating encounters, the director-actor attempts to locate a meaning in routine — first an insistence upon it, and then a decisive break.

Akerman regularly incorporates letters into narrative, but News from Home , and the massively underseen Letters Home , are her only epistolary films.
Both projects explore the relationship between mother and daughter through readings of their correspondence, and as Akerman recites the messages her mother sent during a two-year sojourn in New York, images of the city unfurl in dry but mesmeric montage.
In her first frontal engagement with the Holocaust, Akerman travelled to the homes of three female survivors and interviewed them in their living rooms.
A city symphony, composed of blaring traffic, halting footsteps and amorous whispers, all suspended on the breeze of a humid Brussels night.
A cousin to News from Home, separated by oceans but not aesthetic or ideological principle. Chantal Akerman for beginners.

Today, looking back over the career of this Belgian-born and also France-based director, we can happily conclude — and this cannot be said of everyone who makes such statements — that her own work has been worthy of the film that inspired her cinephilic love.
The following Akerman Primer, coinciding with a comprehensive retrospective presented by A Nos Amours at the ICA in London between and [later richly documented in the Chantal Akerman Retrospective Handbook publication of ], annotates a few of these recurring forms and themes in her work, while trying to respect the fierce tension that underlies it: an audiovisual art across all media that can be, on one level, so youthful, free, lyrical and romantic, is always transforming itself, on another level, into an angry, probing, sometimes melancholic reflection on the troubled state of things.
And then it finds renewed hope and energy, a reason to go on living and struggling, in that selfsame lyricism ….

This leads to relationships with others that can seem dry, barren, even violent — as we see also in her early feature Je tu il elle In many of her films, Akerman portrays unconventional sexual relationships, highlighting the complexity of issues relating to gender roles, sexual difference and erotic orientation.
Ambiguity reigns when love walks in the door. She comes from a Jewish-Polish family; her maternal grandparents perished in Auschwitz.
