There's not a lot of depth here, the story itself is not that cohesive or compelling, yet the writing is great and Cruise delivers his lines perfectly and there is a sort of philosophical element.
There's some humor in here as well that is really quite priceless, dry and subtle. It makes the movie click. Also, the action sequences are really good, way above most action films.
They are not over the top and CGI laden but rather, simple, realistic and extremely well executed. The car chase is a good example. The sounds, the camera work, the way Cruise runs through the gears.
How many movie car chases have been done with a sound track the meshes perfectly with the car, the right amount of gears and synced to the actors shifts.
The devil's in the details and this movie sweats those details and it elevates it. There's nothing hokey about the action sequences, it is realistic and satisfying.
If you like Chevy muscle cars, you'll find extra bonuses in a cowl inducted '70 Chevelle SS which gets a very intense work out and a lot of body damage during the car chase sequence.
It should also be mentioned that the female lead is played by Rosamund Pike who plays the idealistic defense attorney to a T and plays off Cruise perfectly.
She's also drop dead gorgeous and fun to watch. The entire cast played their parts well and gave excellent and intense performances.
All in all I found this movie to be extremely entertaining in the ways that action movies should be. One person found this helpful.

I don't really understand how one of the smallest looking actors was chosen to play someone who is depicted as a giant in the books.
But that's not really why you see the films. The acting is fine the effects work well if not a little low budget looking at times.
It's got Tom Cruise attached so you're likely knowing what you're setting yourself up for. I never really rated Tom Cruise as a 'good actor' or one of Hollywoods heavyweights as he always appeared to have his roles tailor made for him..
When I saw him in a series of four films he made, not sequentially but here and there I thought he was quite adaptable and found his movies entertaining and watchable.
Jack Reacher, ex-Military, starts to involve himself and make inquiries when a suspect held for multiple murders, drops his name.
The suspect remembers little about the crime and the plot thickens and starts to take off once Reacher begins to 'poke his nose' where it doesn't belong - according to the criminals that is.
Reacher is a one man fighting machine. The action is pretty-much non stop, and has some good fight scenes and chases. So I never read the books, so the height issue really didn't matter to me.
This is just a great film. Jack Reacher is a maverick ex military policeman, asked to help out a guy he knows has killed in the past.

In fact the truth is age. Cruise slips into the role effortlessly now he is older. Yes, he's far smaller than the character in the books, but if you watch this as a pure film, simple entertainment you will love it.
Quietly and wickedly witty and sometimes almost comic - the two goons trying to kill Reacher in the bathroom but more of a danger to each other is terribly funny - but what is also evident is a very good detective thriller.
Very early on we know who the bad guys are but the detail is in the motive and just who is the bad guy on the inside. I know Cruise gets knocked for many things but he is purely a proper movie star, and today there are not that many of them about.
A sequel is already on the cards, and on this performance it should be a top notch series to look forward to.
