Do allow me to alert you to the fact that Colette was nominated for the Nobel Prize of Literature in , a fact that is never even mentioned in the movie, not even in the closing moments as to what became of her in later years the movie covers roughly the years That is not a strong recommendation obviously, but it's still worth checking out for the stellar performance of Keira Knightley in the title role.
It seems as is Knightley threw herself into this role without holding anything back. Dominic West, as Willy, does quite well too but of course plays an inherent unlikable character.
I also have to say that I found it a bit off-putting to see all of these characters, living in France, reading French language newspapers, writing French language letters and diaries, etc.
It opened recently at my local art-house theater here in Cincinnati. The early evening screening where I saw this at was attended nicely and mostly by seniors for some reason.
I thought it was a crude and really just an excuse to show how far people will go when they live around snobs, perversion and elitism that comes with living in a large city around very wealthy people who don't have enough to do in their lives.
It has become chic now to love this sort of thing, but I turned it off and am glad I didn't by this movie.
I discovered the writing of Colette many years ago, when I was about 13 years old and Mademoiselle Magazine ran an excerpt of Colette's own writing.
I looked forward to the film and was sorely disappointed with it. The script was terrible. The characters were undeveloped. Scenes of lesbianism were, I suppose, meant to stand in to prove out "race-y" this woman was.
There was no real exploration of her talent, her writing, her inner life. Don't rent this video.

Keira Knightley is the queen of period drama. Well done. Colette is an intriguing biopic filled with scandal and a troubled romance that goes from partner to partner like Colette.
I found her life interesting to say the least and I was engaged the entire time watching Colette. However, I found myself constantly distracted by the fact that this is a story about a French woman author, who wrote French novels in the French language, while living in Paris, France; meanwhile, the film Colette has everything speaking English.
It's like director Wash Westmoreland just wanted to make an English period drama and said that this French person's life will do.
I wish this was instead a French language film. It is so odd seeing everyone in Paris speaking English. Despite my frustration with Colette's language of choice, it is a beautifully shot film with endless pastures of nature and extravagant furnishings in Paris.
The great use of close ups for people's faces mixed with far wide shots for nature are quite affecting. The pretty period accurate costumes, ornate homes, posh haircuts, and sweeping score complement Parisian hedonistic lifestyle lovingly.
I found Blue Is the Warmest Color, Carol, and Disobedience to be more profound and emotional depictions of lesbian relationships. Although, Colette feels natural and not contrived in telling this story instead of a lesser movie throwing this subplot in for bonus points.
