With forced sheltering, we thought this would be a great movie to watch as a family. This movie doesn't disappoint: no crude humor or swearing Night at the Museum adapts Milan Trenc's fantastic children's book and tells the story of a dad down on his luck but trying to win favor with his son.

Perpetual loser Larry Daley Ben Stiller is fast running out of career options when he lands a menial gig as night watchman for the New York Museum of Natural History, where history comes alive Maybe some plot spoilers.

It's like this. Larry is a hapless dreamer who goes thru jobs like they were socks. His latest career flops came at a virtual reality driving range and with something he calls the snapper think "the clapper".

The constant instability in Larry's life makes his ex-wife Kim Raver question whether he's responsible enough to care for their son, Nicky, of whom they share custody.

It doesn't help that his failures are matched up against the success of his ex-wife's go-getting bond trader beau Paul Rudd whose career young Nicky now wants to emulate.

Larry promises Nicky he's meant for better things, to which his kid retorts with a harsh "What if you're wrong?

You're just an ordinary guy. You should get a job. Larry, on the verge of eviction, lands the night watchman position at the desolate Museum of Natural History.

It's a place that's steadily showing decline in patronage. Larry is haphazardly trained by the three elderly security guards he's replacing. He's handed an instruction manual composed of ratty sheets of paper, of which the top three perplexing directions were: 1 Throw the bone.

One of the old guards, Cecil, gives Larry an enigmatic warning to "not let anything in or out. He wakes up to find that the enormous skeleton of a Tyrannosaurus Rex has vanished.

A shocked Larry soon learns that, every night, since the s, the museum exhibits come alive until sun-up. And Larry's job as the night guard is to ensure that these ambulatory exhibits don't get out of hand and, more importantly, that they stay indoors as exposure to sunrise will instantly reduce them to dust.

My favorite exhibits? It's surely not the pickpocketing capuchin monkey. It's a sprawling collection that includes faceless Civil War figures, dioramas populated by warring cowboys, Mayans, and Roman legionnaires.

These are only some of the things that reanimate and run rampant every night. There is even a mystical Egyptian tablet.

Unlike the friendly 26th president, most of the museum creatures are hostile or indifferent and require a unique set of methods in handling.

Suddenly frantic for historical knowledge, Larry hits up a lovely museum employee named Rebecca Carla Gugino. Only, history lessons aren't enough.

An unforeseen element enters the scene, threatening to cause incalculable damage to the prestigious museum and, even worse, imperil the enchanted exhibits.

Can Larry, who hasn't stuck to anything in his entire life, save the day and make his kid proud? Maybe don't get your hopes up.

In many ways, Night at the Museum is reminiscent of the original Jumanji, except that Jumanji offers a more heightened sense of jeopardy.

Initially, there's a perception of danger that crescendos with the appearance of the daunting T-Rex. But the cute resolution to the ensuing chase sequence immediately undermines whatever ounce of peril had been projected.

The skeletal dinosaur is spectacular. The miniscule warriors look convincing in their dimensional relation to their surroundings. And I really enjoyed the Easter Island statue.

The lions, however, just look passable. One more time Ben Stiller channels the lovable loser who was so effectively showcased in There's Something About Mary.

I get a kick out of how Stiller's default quirkiness gains him easy access to a ridiculously manic side. For instance, an aggrieved Larry promises the thieving monkey - who'd twice stolen his museum keys - that "a storm is coming," but, then, we learn that the "storm" takes the shape of Larry's merely substituting his museum keys with plastic toy keys.

He crows, "See! I told you a storm was coming! The ever chill Owen Wilson shines as he continues to play the part of Owen Wilson. It's another cowboy role for him.

He and Stiller sure do have great comic chemistry. Robin Williams is nicely subdued and even moving as the fatherly Teddy Roosevelt who harbors a crush on a fellow exhibit figure and who, later, owns up to certain insecurities, even disclosing that he's aware of his waxen origins.

It's an all-star cast that numbers Dick Van Dyke, Mickey Rooney, and Bill Cobbs as the trio of guards who were "retired" due to downsizing.

They're not given much to do though Rooney is amusing , but it was nice to see those old veterans still working. Ricky Gervais is humor as the uptight museum director who is incapable of finishing a sentence or an adage.

Carla Gugino is someone who I wish had participated more but is instead reduced to the role of an ambivalent romantic interest. Meanwhile, Mizuo Peck as the beautiful, wistful guide Sacajawea glows with beauty and communicates to the audience, even though she doesn't have a lot of dialogue.

Night at the Museum is a fun foray into escapism. I wouldn't be surprised if the kid viewers take an interest in history after watching this.

There were a few things I was meh about. I thought it was bogus, the manner in which Larry resolved his quarrel with Attila the Hun.

And, unsurprisingly, in its sensibilities, the movie caters more towards the ankle-biters, although the Three Stooges bit between Larry and the monkey - you'll know which one - is nothing but universally funny.

I've watched this movie before and I had to watch it again since The Museum of Natural History is removing the Theodore Roosevelt Statue from the front of the building.

They may physically remove the statue, but it will always be here in this excellent movie for a long time. This movie has a parable, and a theme, that out of adversity, warfare, criminality, people can actually come together and work for a common cause, and that is getting the golden tablet back so the museum pieces can come alive every night and maintain something incredibly special.

Larry must also maintain his job and make his son proud of him, and he does that in the end by mastering the technique of saving the museum and actually increasing sales.

I don't know what golden tablet will be necessary to maintain our democracy in the United States, but we certainly do need one as I write this review, and taking statues down is not the right way to go about saving the history of this great country.

One person found this helpful. I believe that subpar, faulty discs were used for the burning of this edition of this film. I have purchased this film multiple times new and used, only for each copy to not play at the same place in the film.

I would give both of those five stars. Naturally, when I found out Secret of the Tomb was on Amazon, I rented it, expecting it to be just as amazing as the other two movies.

It's missing something, I can't really put my finger on it. Don't get me wrong, it's still worth watching, but it lacks the charm of the others. Maybe it's just the thought that this is the last movie in the trilogy, and my upset-ness is messing it up for me My advice?

Sort by: Newest Oldest. For being a trilogy that had inadequate storyline to stretch into three movies, I think this final movie is pretty good.

If you liked the first two, then you won't be disappointed with the third. It has a few more mature underlying themes than the first two, but is still a clean movie.

It's my least favorite out of the three Night in the Museum movies, but is not terrible. The plot is reasonably entertaining and there are a few new interesting additions to the cast as well as a change of scenery since a majority of the movie takes place in London.

I would recommend this to anyone who watched the first two! I think overall, it's a good family series.

I really enjoyed the first two movies in the "Night at the Museum" series but, honestly, this third - and final - installment is far and away the best.

What makes it so, in my opinion, is the poignancy that is so evident throughout the movie: The son who has grown up, the father who seems finally to have realized that more is not always better, and the enduring bonds of friendship exhibited by the "exhibits" as they realize that their very special existence is coming to an end all make this film extraordinary.

The humor that marked the first two installments is present, of course, but there are tender moments spaced throughout the film that lift it far above the kind of slapstick humor that we generally associate with Ben Stiller's films.

Truly, a remarkable piece of storytelling made all the more special by the fact that it is the last film ever made by two iconic Hollywood stars: Robin Williams and Mickey Rooney.

Highly recommended. Children will enjoy this more than the adults. It was indeed entertaining and we watched it as a family.

The acting was good, darn good and truly comical in some places. The script, costumes, sets, and special effects were also quite good.

I really wanted to give this four stars but couldn't. I did not care for the rude humor. It was kind of funny, maybe, but still rude and repetitive.

Once is tolerable but come on, are we not past grade school humor? Sexual innuendos - this movie is not as wholesome as the previous and they barely made it into this category.

While it did represent many different religions, it gave a heavier hand to New Age beliefs and channeling.

All in all, it made for a fun evening with lots of discussion with the children afterwards. Guess I'm just an old-fashioned sap. The movie was great!!

We had company over and our neice wanted to watch this so we tried to rent - no dice. I use an iPad connected to my TV to stream, but the app would not let me rent although it found it when I searched.

So I downloaded it and played it - now I have this movie taking up room in my iPad memory and I cannot transfer to iTunes or a thumb drive - pretty darn expensive - next time we stick to HBO GO, Netxlix etc.

Together, the set is perfect and looks nice on my shelf with the simple primary colored covers, but more importantly my family had a great time watching them!

I totally cried at the end of this one; it's a comedy adventure series that everyone should see. All the gang are back for this last movie and it's great.

Only thing I found cheesy and more for kids to laugh at is Ben Stiller's caveman twin. Just silly to me but other than that it was good fun as usual.

It was sad to see Robin Williams knowing it was one of his last films, but he was superb as usual as Teddy Roosevelt. This was also the last film for movie icon Mickey Rooney.

Robin Williams was also was the character voice for the Garuda that tries to stop the crew from disturbing the sleeping demon serpent with nine heads the Xiangliu.

Definitely worth the rent! All of the Night at the Museum movies are funny, and this one was no exception, but this was my least favorite. I felt the ending was a bit sad in a way, and that just took away some of the fun of the movie for me.
